Utilizing traditional copper plates with non-toxic acid, this course will explore new and old approaches to etching. Etching, an intaglio process dating back to the Middle Ages, involves transferring a drawing or a value tone INTO a metal plate, which is then printed on paper through an etching press. In this intro class, intaglio plate-making and printing with be covered, using traditional techniques as well as new strategies. Aquatint, which is the process to add tonal value to a plate, and Spit Bite, which is as good as it sounds, will be covered. While bad-ass draftsmanship is welcome, it’s not required!

The class will focus on Etching and printing with copper plates using traditional techniques as well as new ways printing with simultaneous intaglio + surface-roll color processes. The Gowanus Studio Space

In an era when art encompasses infinite amalgams of visual media, The Gowanus Studio Space encourages inter-disciplinary exchange and provides affordable access to facilities for artists and designers.  Offering exhibition, curation and production opportunities, the studio is an incubator for new ideas and an inroad to today's insular art world.

The GSS' 40+ members rent low-cost studios and storage and have 24-hour access to a woodshop, print studio and large common workspace.  GSS was established with little funding in industrial Gowanus in 2007, and is now in the final stage of an ambitious move to a new 7500 sq-ft home.
